Room 14 have been imagining that we live in the future. Something terrible has happened to Earth which means we need to leave Earth in a spaceship to travel through space to a new planet in our solar system. Many have imagined that in the future though aliens from other galaxies have discovered our galaxy which adds an interesting twist to the task of finding somewhere else to live.

From Immersion Assembly Term 4 2011

As soon as I walked in to the hall for immersion assembly I giggled at Mr Barks. He was wearing a freaky alien mask. Suddenly the screen caught my attention as it said “Outta This World.” It had planets surrounding the words. So I knew we are learning about space this term.

In an Immersion Assembly the teachers in every team have an item to perform. My favourite was the team my mum was in her because her team did a rap about planets. It was funny because they didn’t say a word, all they did was dance like a robot. It was really clever!

“Team five,” Mr Burt announced . I thought it would be a play but guess what! They stuck their heads on to the characters of the actual Star Wars movie. Did you know that Mr Harris was Princess Laia and Mrs Nua was Luke Skywalker?

I think that I would be good at learning about space.My favourite planet is Saturn. Can’t wait till we learn about it.

Waiting with excitement for our cross country race, I was jumping up and down like a crazy monkey in the jungle. It was the 10 year old boys turn to run. Mr Burt said “On your marks, get set go”. I sprinted as fast as I could and I was coming first but sadly Lorenzo and Wyatt dashed past me like Sin Cara from The WWE. I could hardly see them, they were fast.

Eventually I ran on to the bridge where Ms Squires was right in front of me taking pictures of us. I tried saying “Hi Ms” but I was to fatigued to say anything. A quarter of the way I really thought that I was going to collapse. The track was so rocky.

While Anthony was jogging past me he caught up to Lorenzo and Wyatt. As soon as I rounded a corner this man said “Guess what your half way”. I felt like I was blessed.

Suddenly one of the shells nearly tore my shoe at the bottom. Luckily I've got shoes on." I thought to myself. Finally we turned around for the last stretch at the reserve near Tamaki College’s Technology hall.It was so rocky it felt like I was running on a desert.

Coming up through the bush onto our school field Hossana, Marvin and I had a foot race. We were all running as fast as we could but I only came second so I was so disappointed. I said “Flip I wish I came first” Marvin interrupted “It’s not about winning you know, it’s just about having fun and you should be proud that you completed the race”. I could now finally say “Hi Ms”.

Skatelands

I entered the skating rink with confidence and skillful paces. I glided gracefully at tremendous speed with the wind blowing in my hair. I was just watching Uili glide backwards across the skate rink. I was so jealous!

Then it was time to race....”All girls who want to race, report to the skate rink,” Richard (the old man who worked there) said,or something like that! I was ready to race and I was also full of energy too.

It was Jay-Lee,Tyla-Marie, Mary, Tui and me who was going to race.We all heard the word GO and off we went. We had to do three whole laps round the skating rink.When it was half way through, I fell and cried! I was so embarrassed! ”AHHHH!” I yelled out. My dad helped me get up and I lost the race, of course!!!! I got bumps and bruises on my legs and my butt!

My dad said “Your OK,your OK!” so I believed him and I got back on to the skating rink!

The Picnic

While the wind was blowing and the were waves rolling at the reserve, Pt England school was making their way down to Pt England Reserve to have a fantastic picnic. Kids were playing on the beach, maneuvering around the slippery and gluggy clay and rocks, as well as trying to turn the rocks over to find the crabs underneath.

In the meantime my friend Nathan and I (Calvin) were making things out of clay like clay cannon balls and skulls. Later on Nathan and I went to have some rock melon,Nathan did not want any because he said he vomited when he ate it.

Dying to go to the toilet, the portaloos arrived and I was relieved. Then the time had come to pack up and return to school.

Christchurch Earthquake

Devastating news has been confirmed that Christchurch suffered from another bad earthquake. Although the earthquake measured 6.3 magnitude, the damages were worse than before.The last earthquakeearthquake was deeper down in the ground but this one was shallower and that’s what caused most of the damage.Since September Christchurch has been having little after shocks until this big one.

I feel so sad sorry the kids in Christchurch that suffer through this kind of stuff. Especially for the people who lost they loved ones and homes. May luck and hope be with them.

This term at our school we are learning all about Little Critters, bugs, creepy crawlies, insects, arachnids, slugs and snails. Creatures that make up 97% of the animal kingdom.

Recently at school we have also been having some major building work take place. So we decided to write a script about a cockroach called Colin whose home at school is about to be demolished. His mother sets him the task of finding a new home but there are distractions along the way.

In term 2 Room 15 had to create a hyperstudio stack that showed the components of Earth, an animation of a volcano erupting with an explanation about how it erupts and also had to make an animation showing them running away from the ash in the unlikely event of Maungarei erupting.

This term for Active Earth we have been learning all about volcanoes. In groups we wrote storyboards, scripts, made animations and acted to make a movie showing the scenario of an Auckland volcano erupting. We had lots of fun making these although some of us were still madly trying to get them finished even on the last day of term.

Gabriel Rugby Academy

On Friday the 3rd of June we had some people come from the rugby academy. Their names were Villi, Michael, T, Sam, John and one more of their mates whose name I don't know. We had Michael and Villi to train with while the others went to train with the other classes.

First we did some relays where we had to move the ball around our body and under our legs. Starford's team won most of them. (They were team three). Our next activity we did was just normal running relays. After that we did some more running relays but this time when we got to the cones we had to do five star-jumps. Waata cheated because he just went up and down.

Groups 1 and 2 then had to join lines to play a game called pass the boxing bag. Groups 3 and 4 had to do the same. We were having so much fun as we passed the boxing bag along the line. I was at the end of the line and I had to run back with it. It was quite heavy and difficult to run with. Versing Starford was hard because he is one of the strongest in the class and he is the fastest.

Villi then taught us a new game called run around. Run around is a game where you have to run around until Michael calls out a number. Sprinting as fast as we could you had to look for that number in a group like if he calls out three, you have to get into groups of three. We played two games. The winners of the first game were Rita and Oshania. The winners of the second game was Starford and Kobe.

The next game we played was bull rush. In the first game Starford and Mary were in and the second game Kobe and Rita were in. They had to choose a colour and if we had that colour we had to try make it to the other end. The winner of the first game was Te Rina. The winners of the second game were Oshania and Me.

Next we had to say goodbye to the Rugby Academy people because we had to give the other rooms a turn to train. We then went on to the bottom field to play touch and have some more fun. The people who didn't do their homework had to sit down by the edge of the playground. Eventually we had a turn to play with only 5 minutes to go.

What a fun day we had with the Rugby Academy people come and visit. I wish they could come and visit again because I play for the school and want some more tips about playing rugby.

Iron Brian by Litia

"Miss Squires what are those people doing making hamburgers?" I asked suspiciously as I looked at the people sizzling patties. Right after that Miss Squires got everyone to line up. We were going to the hall.

When we got there we sat down and just waited. I could hear everyone chattering with excitement. Suddenly everyone all went silent as a man came running up the aisle and jumped up onto the stage."Hi guys" he shouted. We all shouted back at him saying hi. It sounded like there was a big lion roaring. After the loud noise died down the man introduced himself and said that his name was Eddie. After that another person came onto the stage. Her name was Sarah. Eddie told us that they were playing hide and seek with Iron Brian. "Who is that"? I asked smiling. After that we shouted and made as much noise as we could, suddenly a man dressed up in a suit with a really fat head jumped out from the side of the stage. I got a fright. It was Iron Brian. Then he revealed where he was hiding. Iron Brian told us that he was hiding behind the girls toilets."Ooh" all the boys said. Finally they told us exactly why they were here. It was because we were going to learn about the good meats to eat.
So they had about four or five big cards that were facing ore backwards on the stage. As soon as they were finished explaining Sarah turned over the first card. It had a picture of Iron Brian saying meat and meat alternatives. After that Iron Brian told us that red meats were better than white meats. Red meats are better because they have more iron. The red meats are steak and beef and other things like that. But the white meats are fish and chicken.
When Sarah flipped over the next card it said fruit and vegies. I like fruit but I'm not that crazy about vegies. My least favourite vegetable is beans. But I don't hate every vegetable. If I have to choose a favourite I would say carrots. They are nice and juicy.
Anyway the next card was dairy products. So that included milk,youghurts and cheese. Dairy food is very good for you because it has calcium which makes your bones strong.
And finally the last card was of course cereals and bread, that is one of the the things that we can eat in the morning. That was the last card I was getting tired. But then we had to get up and do a dance. I let out a loud sigh and stood up. First we learnt the dance and then we did it with music. When we learnt it we were split into groups and had a little competitition.
Finally the show was over, there was still one more surprise. Everyone was going to get free burgers. Yummy!!! So we got up and went outside to get our burgers. They were delicious. I hope Iron Brian comes again.

Our Cool Trip To One Tree Hill

The other week Rooms 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 went on a trip to one of Auckland's many volcanoes, One Tree Hill. Here is Ashleigh's recount of the day.

I just remembered that today we were going to go to One Tree Hill.We went to One Tree Hill because long ago one tree hill was a volcano. Luckily it wasn't raining because we would have been soaking wet. Suddenly we all went on the bus ready to go to one tree hill. Then we arrived.
The classes were all going to go to three types of places at different times. One place was the learning centre the two other places were when we played a game and when we climbed up the mountain. First my group went to the leaning centre to learn more about how volcanoes are formed and lot more information. One of the things that I learnt was that One Tree Hill has been around for about 20 000 years. As soon as I heard that I said "Wow that is a long time". Right after that we got to see a movie that showed us what one tree hill looked like when it erupted. Eventually we finished our lesson and it was time that we were going to climb the mountain.

It was a hard time while trying to get up but I managed to do it. Before I knew it I was on the top of the mountain. I was proud of myself because I had got this far. So we all had a little rest. Now we were all ready to go down. As soon as we got down we got to the down and ate our lunch. After we ate our lunch we all played a game called Capture the Flag while waiting for the bus to come.The bus came and we were ready to go back to school.

I had fun going to One Tree Hill. I hope when you go there you will have fun.

Early European Settlers to NZ

Room 15 have been finding out about the Early Europeans who came to NZ. We read about the Whalers and Sealers, Missionaries, Settlers and Traders. We wrote scripts as if we were one of these people and recorded our scripts with our animations of the European ships arriving in NZ playing in the background. Room 14 and 15 were playing a game called capture the flag. Capture the flag is a easy but tactical game to play.
First Miss King precisely explained the rules and the roles to us. In the beginning we got divided into teams.Everyone in room14 and 15 all had different roles to do like guarding the flag area, running to get the flag and rescuing.I keep on getting out but luckily Darius kept on gratefully rescuing me.
We got the first three points. I had to run after my opponent because he had the flag. I heard lots of people shouting "Spartans".We got five scores and room14 got one score.
At the end of the game we celebrated by picking up rubbish. We won that too. I felt excited playing Capture the flag because that was my first time playing it.

This term we are learning about celebrations around the world. We are comparing the similarities and differences of these celebrations and in particular looking at what food is eaten at these celeebrations. Our topic is called Food, Glorious, Food and our focus question is, "How does food enhance a celebration?"

The Ultimate Race

Jittery and jumpy, I lined up with all the other competitors. Shivers slithered down my spine. I hopped up and down full of nervous excitement. Quickly I shut my eyes and took a deep breath. “You can do this,” I whispered in my mind.

All of a sudden the clappers sounded and there were flailing arms and legs everywhere. Everyone was jostling for position, wanting to win first place. “Bajeebas, they’re fast!” I whispered to myself. I felt like my legs had turned into jelly, so wobbly.
“Come on Reka! You can do it!” said a voice in my mind. “Doesn’t matter where you come just be proud of yourself.” I had no idea who that was but it sure encouraged me.

As I passed a corner, and then another my muscles ached and mud was squelching under my feet. “You’re really close, don’t give up now,” I murmured to myself. As I gasped for breath I kept asking myself, “Am I able to continue?” My arms felt tired out, my eyes felt like they were burning.

Before long I spotted the finish line and powered ahead wanting to complete the race. I panted and wheezed as I crossed the finish line. It felt like I couldn’t breathe or feel my legs. Coming 6th didn’t matter to me. My task for this year’s cross country was to be able to complete the race no matter where I came - to be proud of the fact that I had finished it with perseverance.

Korero of Week 6

Last week in assembly we got a Korero to remember. The Korero was "KEEP IT REALLY REAL".

We had that korero because lots of people had been keeping really real, here are some people that have been keeping it really real and why they have...

1. Tonja is one of the first person because in the cross country she ran by herself because the other times in cross country she ran with a teacher.

2. Brendan is one of the second people because he wanted to go to the Cross Country but he had go to the hospital and so what he did was he ran up and down the hospital just to participate in the Cross Country.

3. Leoden was one of the third person because he never stopped in the cross country and kept on running to the end so he was one that kept it very strong.

4. Ngaina was one fourth because she had done a very good job in Cross Country because she had a very positive attitude after she had finished the race.

5. Last but not the least was Ashley because she had been training really hard for Cross Country and because she had ran after school to places.

6. And last was Dillion.

After the famine hit they became really really poor and only had enough food for a couple of days.But one night in their dimly-lit cottage the malicious stepmother came up with an evil plan,clutching each other Hansel and Gretal over heard whisperings from the kitchen.The cruel stepmother said in a growling voice,"Tomorrow at sunrise we will take Hansel and Gretal to the enchanted forest and abandon them for ever, hahahaha!"she said. Gretal started to cry and they started to tremble with fear.The father felt shame and remorseful because he couldn't stand up for him self. In the dark moon-lit night, Hansel jumped out of his bedroom saying,"Ouch Ow"as he walked on the stoned footpath. He hastily gathered shiny white pebbles and heard a cackled sound,"Who's there?"

Suddenly the evil witch captured Hansel and thrust him into a tiny cage. “Let me out!” pleaded Hansel, but to no avail. The witch just cackled, “Hee hee hee. I’ve been looking for a boy like you. Eat up. I want you to become plump and appetising for my feast.”
She handed him a plateful of delectable and scrumptious sweets and pastries which Hansel was unable to resist.

Some weeks later the hideous witch approached Hansel in the cage. With a sly grin spreading across her face she snarled, “Hold out your finger you little rat-faced weasel to show me how fat you’ve become.” But despite quivering with fear Hansel had come up with a cunning and clever plan. He held out a scrawny chicken bone to show her knowing that she was gullible and had failing eyesight.
As the witch grasped the chicken bone she shrieked, “Blast! You’re even skinnier than before.”

Zone Soccer

On Wednesday at eleven o clock the under10s and over10 soccer team went to Dunkirk park to play for the zone soccer. They had lots of fun playing soccer unfortunately they did not win the whole of their soccer games but at least they had fun. The hardest team for the under 10 were Tamaki Primary.

The next friday the school had an assembly and when the soccer team's went up on stage Matthew got the player of the day certificate and for the overs it was Jonty. That day they played very good and they worked hard thats how they got player of the day.

As I walked into the assembly hall it was like I had stepped into a fairytale book. I saw all the teachers dressed up in fairytale costumes, I was getting confused. The person I was most shocked at was Mrs Nua she was dressed as a sympathetic fairy godmother with a wand as well.
Suddenly Mr Burt came walking in and yelled out"Has anyone seen my beautiful princess"? All the kids replied back"NO". He was holding a glass cup pretending it was the glass slipper and was dressed in a green and white funny costume with white and black shoes. He told all the teachers to come on the stage.
The teacher I loved the best was Ms Vaafusuaga she was dressed as Puss in boots . She had boots, hat and was dressed in black. She looked cool. It was amazing she even spoke the kind of language that Puss in boots spoke.

My next favourite teacher was Mrs Nua she was really pretty, she had a fabulous and beautiful dress and her hair actually matched her clothes. She had a wand and she looked magical and mysterious.

It was an awesome immersion assembly, one I would never forget. I feel very happy about this terms topic 'The Art in Storytelling'. It is really cool that we are learning about fairy tales more and more. I love it.

Earthquake Info.

The extension group were lucky enough to have a video conference with a well known New Zealand geologist the other day. The were able to ask many questions about earthquakes and found out a lot of information. They wrote about their experience on their blogs. Here is Selena's recount.

In the morning the whole extension class had a video conference with a famous Geologist named Hamish Campbell. We were talking to him about the earthquake that happened in Fiordland this year. To prepare for our conference with Hamish Campbell, we made Seismometer.

He told us that it happened at 9pm and it was on the 16th of July. On the north island the Pacific plate was going underneath the Australian plate , but on the south island the Australian plate was heading underneath the Pacific Plate. It lasted 30 seconds and no one was killed, but it was measured by a Seismometer and it measured 7.6 in magnitude , the biggest earthquake worldwide in 80 years.

Speaking of earthquakes I am going to tell you about an earthquake that happened in China in the city of Tangshan in the year of 1976. It lasted 15 seconds and it killed 242,000 and around 50, 000 people were injured. It was recorded as 7.8 magnitude. The reason that so many people die in earthquakes is because they are really dangerous because they happen so fast and they do not have warnings like for e.g Volcanoes , and Tornadoes. Other kinds of disasters have warnings.

The facts that I mostly liked was when Hamish Campbell told us that in the earthquake was felt in New Plymouth. Another fact that I want you to know about is that the Plates that are covering New Zealand are not in a circle shape they are in any different shape.

Last term we were learning about Dinosaurs and Joan Wiffen was part of our important project but just today Hamish just told us that she passed away. She passed away on Tuesday at the Hastings Hospital.

Room 15 has so many enthusiastic bloggers it's hard to choose those to be our bloggers of the week. Nevertheless we have had a few who have worked exceptionally hard and have been the lucky ones to get to choose a skin or bling for their blogs.

Holiday at ROTORUA and GISBOURNE

On the second week of the holidays my Mum, my Dad, my little brother, my little sister and I went in a car for a road trip, we went from Auckland to Rotorua. We left our house on Tuesday and it took us about 2-3 hours to get there. On the way we saw heaps of trees and that reminded me about how we all breath fresh air from the trees. As for other countries, it's really hot and you could get really sunburned. In other countries they can hardly breath because of all the pollution in the air. Pollution is when; not many trees are around, there are heaps of people living in that country, or that there are many factories around the city making clouds of smoke in the the air.
When we got to Rotorua it smelled like rotten eggs and my dad said that was called sulphur. We had already checked in online and all we had to do next was get our card, take in all our luggage and think of what plans we were going to do next. The Hotel we checked in was called Rydges. We all decided that we all should go swimming of course because if we would vote in our family about which town is the best to go swimming at... we would choose Rotorua.
We went swimming at about 7-30 and swam for 1-2 hours. I backstroked really well and I also freestyled really well, but the swimming style that I'm not quite good at is breaststroke. I haven't practised that style so that not why I'm good at it. I met a friend and he said he likes to breaststroke. So he told me a few tips and I learned quite a lot from him.

Sylvia has also been working hard. Here is an acrostic poem she has written about the Megalosaurus.

Megalosaurus

Megalosaurus is a meat-eating dinosaur.

Enormous dinosaur that hunts for meat.

Gets up straight away and runs for it.

Away it goes sprinting for his meat.

Large and huge.

Over and under it goes to chase it's dinosaur.

Saurichian and lizard-hipped.

Allosaurus and Megalosaurus fighting and biting.

Under hiding so his enemy does not see him.

Running to catch it's prey.

Under already dead dinosaurs.

Man in the Mirror

This evening we watched the news and I was saddened. The news reporter said that Michael Jackson has passed away. The news reports told me about how young he was when he became famous - 10 years of age - my brother's age. Also that he kept changing his face as he got older, his Dad and all the many concerts they had to do as children. He was an extremely talented musician as well as a very good - actually excellent dancer. My favourite song of his is Thriller. My Dad likes it so much he knows the whole routine. He taught me the moves so now I know it.
I was very very sad when I heard this. To me there will never be another MJ.

The Famous WARRIORS at the GI Courtyard

On Wednesday 22ND of July the Vodafone WARRIORS came to the Courtyard in GI. They were walking around and people would go up to them and say "Can I have your signature?" Then more people came it was heaps of fun. The DJ said "O.K. Don't forget we will be giving away this beautiful jersey signed by all of the WARRIORS" (To your right) It had everyone in the Vodafone Warriors' signatures it looked cool.

Here are Room 15's title page animations they have been working on for their information stacks about their chosen dinosaur. When they are complete these information stacks will show what their dinosaur's different body parts were for, what its habitat and diet were like and how it became extinct.

Dino-Might

This term (Term 2) Room 15 are learning about Dino-Might, this is all about dinosaurs. They are discovering about different kind of dinosaurs.

The main things they need to find out is what period they lived in (Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous), what they ate (Plants or meat) and how many legs they stood on because some dinosaurs stood on 2 legs and some on 4 legs. The dinosaurs that walked on 2 legs had a tail because the tail helped it balance.

This year room 15 has been learning lots about dinosaurs they are doing reports to go with a dinosaur they have partners in doing a dinosaur each group gets a dinosaur each to do a report on.

By the end of the term I think we will have a huge paper of dinosaur names and millions of dinosaur facts.

In week 6 we had a challenge to see who could make the tallest tower out of newspaper, 3 pieces of card, sellotape and string. We had lots of fun but it wasn't as easy as it would seem as most of our towers didn't remain standing until the end of the challenge, toppling over instead.

Well the holidays have just flown by and I can't believe that tomorrow is already the start of a new and exciting year for a bunch of new Room 15 children. I can't wait to meet you all. We've got loads of exciting things to do so I hope you're all feeling as refreshed as I am after a relaxing holiday.
I've read lots of amazing books over the break and I've got a few good ones to read to you that I think you'll really enjoy. I've have also just finished setting up all of your blogs so be thinking about some of the things you have got up to these holidays because all your readers and I are looking forward to hearing about some of your activities.

On Wednesday the Pt England touch team went to verse other schools at Dunkirk reserve.We were waiting for our rides to come and pick us up. By the time we got there we were the last school to get there we had to sit on the ground and listen to a teacher from Glen Brae to explain the rules. So first up we challenged G.I primary we all were ready to go then we started. The 1st try was scored by Jonty. When Jonty got a try his supporters were cheering as loud as a lion roaring. The other schools we challanged were St. patrick's,Glen brae,Tamaki primary and G.I primary.We played rough as if we were a bunch of tigers playing tiger war. When Misi sored a try he dived like he was diving in a pool of water.

Room15 have been studying flight have been working very hard! Each day a reading and maths group get a turn on the computer and have had great time making keynotes. They were all very cool and they all had to have at least more than two flying objects. We even got to label some of the flying and floating objects.
